Akiachak

Akiachak (Akiacuaq), located on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta along the western bank of the Kuskokwim River, is home to the Akiachak Native Community, a federally recognized Tribe. The village’s approximately 696 residents live a subsistence lifestyle, engaging in subsistence fishing, hunting, and gathering both for food security and for cultural identity.

Erosion and seasonal flooding are the primary concerns for Akiachak. Erosion is occurring at an estimated rate of around 10 feet per year and will eventually reach critical village infrastructure. Ice jams and snowmelt cause annual springtime flood events, which put homes at risk of structural damage and black mold growth, and which have frequently inundated the village’s landfill, and come close to inundating the honey bucket lagoon, creating a risk of contamination throughout the community and the river.
